Farmers Markets feed the Fleurieu

Approximately 10,000 people each week are eating food bought at either the Willunga Farmers Market (WFM) or Victor Harbor Farmers Market (VHFM).

With a growing membership base of 2165 current active members at the WFM, the number of local members sits at 1674. The VHFM’s membership sits at 680.

Using recent customer satisfaction surveys and our membership databases we know that on average three people benefit from each membership.

The number of visitors to both markets fluctuate weekly, however based on past actual recorded growth from when the WFM was based in the much smaller Alma Hotel car park, with one entrance and exit point, the WFM hosts between 2000 and 5000 shoppers on any given Saturday.

WFM Market Manager, Steve Ashley says, ‘there are no supermarkets in Willunga, so the farmers market has become the local “shop” for people in Willunga and surrounding areas to do their weekly shopping.

‘You can get anything you need from the farmers market. We have stalls that sell everything from fruit and veg through to bakery items, meat, dairy, olives and olive oil and even spreads and dips.

‘The majority of our fresh produce stallholders harvest their produce Friday, the day before the market. The bakery items are baked fresh every Saturday morning. We even have stalls that have a number of deliveries of freshly baked bread right throughout the market.

‘As a shopper you know that what you’re buying is as fresh as can be. This means that the food lasts longer too.

‘This fresh produce can last for weeks in the fridge, so while at first glance some items may appear slightly more expensive than your average supermarket, it’s actually true value for money. ’

The majority of the 68 WFM and 39 VHFM producers are Fleurieu Peninsula based, so shoppers also know that their produce has come from local properties. This minimises handling and travel related costs and damage to vulnerable produce.

Both markets are open every Saturday 8:00 am til 12:30pm; rain, hail or shine. WFM is based in Willunga Town Square and VHFM Membership costs $35 for 12 months, members receive 10% discount at all stalls.
