Willunga Farmers Market festivities a raving success
The Willunga Farmers Market (WFM) kicked off it’s festive season with a bang!
WFM’s inaugural Christmas Twilight Market pulled the largest crowd in the nine year history of the market.
Many stalls had a line up of shoppers prior to the 5pm opening time, with some selling out of stock before the halfway point.
‘I had to ring the farm and get them to bring another truck load of strawberries by 6pm,’ Brenton Sherry of Hillside Strawberries says.
‘We sold what we would normally sell in 4 hours in 45 minutes. We normally sell 85 trays of strawberries in one market, but we sold close to 150 trays at the Christmas Twilight Market.
‘It was our best market in the whole eight years we have been at Willunga Farmers Market.’
Other stallholders sold out of their whole crop.
‘I sold my whole crop in the first 45 minutes.’ Jude McBain, WFM chairperson and operator of Blue Cottage Almonds said.
‘The only almonds I have left are still sitting green on the trees!’
WFM Assistant Market Manager, Billy Doecke says, ‘Market shoppers were shoulder to shoulder, but all were patient and prepared to wait for the top-quality fresh seasonal produce the market is renowned for.
‘The atmosphere was really festive, with everyone enjoying the perfect weather and local musicians.’
WFM also opened new years day, commanding a respectable crowd.
‘Many shoppers were either local residents or came from the nearby holiday houses,’ Billy said.
‘People had cupboards to fill after a week of Christmas left overs.
‘The convenient thing is that the market is not only a destination to buy your groceries, it is also an event and an atmospheric place to catch up with friends.’

The Willunga Farmers Market is open every Saturday, 8am til 12:30pm, and provides fresh, locally grown produce.
